Emma Morris is a qualified nutritionist with a background in psychology and personal training. She combines her love of food, the mind and movement in her practice as a clinical nutritionist. This inspiring lady is someone we can all learn a thing or two from!

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a clinical nutritionist and I work primarily one-on-one with clients in a busy clinical practice in Brisbane CBD, called the JCN Clinic. I am extremely passionate about working with mental health conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. I take a holistic approach to mental health and try to uncover what might be the root cause driver, including functional gut issues, hormone imbalance and nutrient deficiency/excess - just to name a few. When I’m not working I am hanging out with my husband and 2 cats at home! I thoroughly enjoy being in the kitchen and cranking a few tunes - this is a sort of meditation for me!

I am obsessed with gut and mental health, and I am a crazy cat lady! 

What does living a nourished life mean to you?

It means living a life that not only supports your physical health (through good food and appropriate movement for your body) but also your mental and spiritual health. Health is holistic! We need to take care of all parts of ourselves to truly live a nourished life. 

What sparked your passion for health & wellness?

Many things over the years have helped shape my passion for health and wellness. I grew up swimming competitively which ultimately kicked off my passion for movement, however I have also personally suffered from debilitating anxiety and depression in my past, so this was also a catalyst in delving into helping others with similar problems. 

Describe your food philosophy:

Balanced! I eat good, nourishing food most of the time because I love how it makes me feel and helps me to thrive in my every day life. However, I am also a huge fan of dark chocolate and homemade baking, so I will never say no to these! I believe we need some balance in our food to nourish our soul, but I always try to opt for the highest available quality food I can. 

Tell us about what a typical day on your plate looks like:

This is hard because I eat different things all the time, but these are my go-tos at the moment. Generally breakfast will be a buckwheat pancake topped with papaya, blueberries, hemp seeds and nut butter, or a macro balanced smoothie, or eggs and sautéed veggies on homemade toast. Lunch will be some kind of protein like chicken, fish or tempeh with lots of cooked veggies and fresh herbs. Dinner will always be varied but can include wild salmon and roast veggie salad, homemade poke bowls, slow cooked lamb with roast veggies, or pulse pasta loaded with veggies and pesto. If I have dark chocolate lying around I might have a couple of square of this and herbal tea to finish. 

One bit of health advice you wish everyone would follow:

Really tune into your body, and be guided by what works for you - no one else! Too many people are following the latest health trend without really acknowledging how it works for them as an individual. No two people are the same. 

What is one health, wellness or personal development book that you think everyone should read?

I love Rushing Women’s Syndrome by Dr Libby Weaver, The Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden and A Mind of Your Own by Dr Kelly Brogan.
